Aims and Scope
Food and Drug Safety is an international, peer-reviewed open access journal that publishes original research and critical reviews covering all aspects of food and drug safety. The journal aims to promote the scientific understanding and technological innovation that ensure the safety, quality, and efficacy of foods and pharmaceuticals from production to consumption. It serves as a platform for interdisciplinary exchange among scientists, regulators, and industry professionals in the fields of food science, pharmacology, toxicology, and public health.
The scope of the journal includes, but is not limited to:

  • Food contaminants, residues, and foodborne pathogens
  • Risk assessment and management in food systems
  • Safety evaluation of food additives, novel ingredients, and functional foods
  • Toxicological and pharmacological safety assessment of drugs and biologics
  • Pharmacovigilance and post-market surveillance
  • Analytical methods and regulatory science in food and drug control
  • Global food and drug policies, standards, and public health implications

Ecotoxicity of Petrogenic Plastic Particles in Fish: Implication for Human Health and Environmental Risk Assessment

Bwala Mathias Nzitiri, Gaya Abalis Ezra, Nayaya Ahmad Jibrin, Buba Toma
    1-16

    99 (Abstract) 45 (Download)

Petrogenic plastics might fragment within the ecosystems into progressively smaller fragments classified by size as “macroplastics”, “mesoplastics”, “microplastics”, and “nanoplastics”. Petrogenic micro and nano plastics (MNPs) are ubiquitous in the ecosystems and form as a result of the ageing or the action of prevailing bio-environmental factors on the plastic materials or direct release of MNPs... more

Over-the-Counter Drugs: Misuse and Safety Implications

    Alejandro Borrego-Ruiz

    128 (Abstract) 52 (Download)

Although over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are regarded as relatively safe and effective for self-treatment, their growing prevalence and accessibility raise concerns about misuse, addiction, and adverse health consequences. This narrative review provides a current overview of OTC drugs with misuse potential and their associated safety implications. OTC drugs commonly misused include sedative antihistamines, cough mixtures, caffeine-containing... more

Therapeutic Effects of Natural Products in Diabetic Retinopathy through Aldose Reductase Inhibition

    Deokho Lee, Livio Vitiello
    42-50

    40 (Abstract) 18 (Download)

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most dangerous and cruel microvascular complications of diabetes, leading to visual impairment and blindness if left untreated. The development of DR is determined by complex multiple pathologic mechanisms, including oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, retinal vascular dysfunction, and retinal neuronal damage. Aldose reductase (AR) activation in the polyol pathway... more

    12 (Abstract) 4 (Download)

Lactoferrin is a bioactive ingredient that is sensitive to environmental stresses and needs the use of microencapsulation, notwithstanding all the biological activities and effects it exerts. Pectin is a polysaccharide that acts as an anion for ion–ion interactions. Chitosan is a biodegradable and nontoxic material. In this study, lactoferrin was extracted and purified, pectin and... more
